Compliance crackdown for London Companies

Over the coming weeks the first task force will be targeting businesses in London focusing on the restaurant trade. In specific locations and high risk trade sectors across the UK, intensive bursts of compliance activity will be undertaken by specialist teams. The next targeted areas will then be the restaurant trade in the North West and Scotland.

This all comes because of the Government wanting to tackle fraud and tax evasion avoidance from 2011/12 with the £900 spending review investment, aiming to raise an additional £7bn annually by 2014/15.

General Enforcement and Compliance Director Mike Eland said that the task forces represent a new approach using HMRC’s resources in order to identify and then tackle those breaking the rules and those evading effectively and quickly.

The only ones that will be targeted are the ones who choose to deliberately evade the tax or choose to break the rules. The honest businesses should not worry at all about this. However the message is quite clear, if you are deliberately evading tax, then the HMRC will find you and a heavy fine will be levied and even possible criminal prosecution.

HMRC is planning a further nine task forces in 2011/12, with more to follow in 2012/13.
